the c o u r s e of an extended study of the phase d i a g r a m s of r e f r a c t o r y m e t a l s , a n u m b e r of T~-T1.0 s y s t e m s , i . e . , b i n a r y s y s t e m s c o m p o s e d of one of the T5 t r a n s i t i o n m e t a l s V, Nb, or T a on the one side and one of the Tlo m e t a l s , P d or Pt, on the o t h e r , have been i n v e s t i g a t e d in a c o l l a b o r a t i v e effort. Of the six s y s t e m s thus defined, s t u d i e s of the V - P t s y s t e m , 1 the T a - P d s y s t e m 2 and the P t - r i c h p o r t i o n of the T a - P t s y s t e m 3 have a l r e a d y b e e n p r e s e n t e d ; for V - P d a phase d i a g r a m is given in the l i t e r a t u r e . 4 The p r e s e n t p a p e r r e p o r t s the N b - P d s y s t e m ; the r e m a i n i n g s y s t e m , N b - P t , will be r e p o r t e d in a s u b s e q u e n t p u b l i c a tion. E a r l y s u r v e y s of the N b - P d s y s t e m a r e due to G r e e n f i e l d and Beck S and Knapton; 6 c r y s t a l c h e m i c a l s u r v e y s of i n t e r m e d i a t e p h a s e s were made i n d e p e n dently by G i e s s e n , P a r k e r and G r a n t 7 (also r e p o r t e d in Ref. 8) and Maldonado and Schubert; 9 Pd(Nb) t e r m i n a l solid s o l u t i o n s w e r e studied by K u d i e l k a A r t n e r and A r g e n t 1~ and C a t t e r a l l and B a r k e r ; 1~ i n dividual i n t e r m e d i a t e p h a s e s were r e p o r t e d by Dwight ~2 and G i e s s e n and G r a n t ; ~3 p h a s e d i a g r a m s were worked out by S a v i t s k i i et al, ~4 P a r k e r , 1.~ and B o w e r s 1.~ (only the f i r s t of t h e s e has b e e n published); r e v i e w s were g i v e n e . g . by Shunk ~v and P e a r s o n . ~8 The following alloy p h a s e s were r e p o r t e d : t e r m i n a l solid s o l u t i o n s with e x t e n s i v e mutual solubilities;6,14 acr phase at ~ ND2Pd 5'7'1.4'1.5'16 or as a h i g h - t e m p e r a t u r e p h a s e at Nb3Pd29 (however, in c o n t r a s t to t h i s , no ~ phase was o b s e r v e d by Knapton6); a Iow t e m p e r a t u r e phase Nb3Pd2 (NbRu s t r u c t u r e type); 9 an u n i d e n t i f i e d high t e m p e r a t u r e phase ot-Nbpd 7 or Nb2Pd3; 16 N b P d J '9'~'~a'1.5 (MoPt2[= NbPt2] s t r u c t u r e B.
