I have survived. This profound reflection of Emmanuel-Joseph Sieyes on the French Revolution sums up one’s life during turbulent times. Staying under the radar is often the only option. In so doing, the Middle East offers immense opportunities, challenges, and above all ideas. This Handbook on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is one such fruitful outcome. The authors of the Handbook are the primary force behind its successful completion within 15 months. Their passion for Jordan enabled many to take time off from their other pressing commitments. I am moved by their commitment and dedication to the study of the Kingdom. In the 1980s, Professor Subramanian Swamy sparked my interest in the Middle East, and my Guru, Professor M.S. Agwani, trained me as a good student of the region.
