The relationship model between the influence factors and the strategic applications of information systems J-M Choe, Y-H Lee and K-C Park Department of Accounting, College of Business Administration, Kyungpook National University, Taegu, Puk-ku, Sankyukdong, 1370, 702-701, South Korea In previous studies, some researchers empirically suggested the influence factors on the strategic applications of information systems (IS). However, they did not empirically prove the effects of the relationships among the influence factors on the strategic applications of IS. The objectives of this study are to examine these relationships and to identify the moderating effects of support factors on the relationship between the facilitators of alignment and the strategic applications level of IS. For this study, the research model explaining the relationships among influence factors and strategic applications level was developed. The results suggested that there is significant positive correlation between perceived environmental uncertainty and facilitators of alignment. The intervening effect of alignment facilitators and the moderating effects of support factors were also proved. Based on the empirical results, the roles or functions of influence factors and the managerial implications are proposed.
Introduction Research on the strategic applications of information systems (IS) has received significant attention in recent years. The use of IS for strategic purposes has been an important research topic and there have been a large number of studies on the strategic use of IS. In the various research areas of the strategic applications of IS, many studies have focused on the investigation of the influence factors which facilitate and inhibit its strategic use (e.g., Johnston & Carrico, 1988; Neo, 1988; King et al, 1989; Kim & Michelman, 1990; Krcmar & Lucas, 1991; King & Sabherwal, 1992). Though they have tried to examine the influence factors empirically, previous studies generally investigated the simple relationship between influence factors and strategic IS. Some researchers conceptually suggested the influence factors on the strategic applications of IS (e.g., Waeman & Walsham, 1990; Clemons, 1991; Wilkes, 1991). A few researchers empirically proposed the influence factors (e.g., Neo, 1988; King et al, 1989; King & Teo, 1994). However, in previous research the relationships among the influence factors and the strategic applications of IS were not empirically proved. The effects of the relationships among influence factors on the strategic use level of IS were not examined. To understand the role of influence factors and how to manage them to increase the strategic applications level, the relationships among influence factors need to be proved. This paper represents an exploratory effort to empirically test the relationships among the strategic use level
of IS and the influence factors in Korean business firms. Thus, the research questions of this st
