Stability, predictability, and transparency are essential ingredients for global economic growth and development. By providing a strong, rule-based framework to ensure that trade flows as smoothly as possible, the World Trade Organization plays an important role in ensuring that these ingredients also apply to trading relations. But, of course, simply having the rules in place is not enough—they must be enforced. The WTO’s dispute settlement system is central to this work. Indeed, the system is at the heart of everything we do here at the organization, and it was one of the key achievements of the Uruguay Round. Our members rely on the system to ensure that trade disputes are solved according to an objective set of procedures that are equally applied to everybody.
