Thin-Film Solid-State Lithium Battery for Body Worn Electronics Joseph McDermott and Paul C. Brantner Infinite Power Solutions Golden, Colorado 80401

Abstract Infinite Power Solutions manufactures a flexible rechargeable micro ampere-hour solidstate battery based on thin-film Lithium technology where the battery can be engineered into the product for life as a cost effective solution with “the battery that never needs to be replaced”. The performance characteristics of the battery combined with low power electronic textile applications will require “A Different Way of Thinking About Batteries” relative to battery management and innovative methods of recharging the battery (such as charging the battery whenever the materials are washed and dryed). This paper will review the characteristics of the battery specifically in relation to power generation for flexible electronic materials and the integration issues for a thin-film battery for flexible electronic materials. Introduction LiTE*STAR is a solid state thin film rechargeable Lithium battery manufactured by Infinite Power Solutions in Golden, Colorado. The battery has a research history that began in the early 90’s at Oakridge National Labs [1-5]. The battery is environmentally friendly, and with its thin, flexible form and long life the battery can be configured for nearly any low power battery requirement. The baseline pilot production battery cells implement a crystalline Lithium Cobalt Oxide cathode that provides battery cell capacities of ~200 micro Ampere-Hours per cm2 of active cathode area with the capability to support steady current power requirements of 5 milli Amps and pulse current (~100 msec) power requirements of > 40 milli Amps with a voltage > 3.0 Vdc. This baseline cell can also survive a wide storage temperature range (-50º C to + 150º C) and has also shown capability to deliver reliable power at temperatures down to -50º C. The LiTE*STAR battery is a rechargeable battery that has demonstrated the capability to support 10’s of thousands of complete charge / discharge cycles [4]. Key applications, such as body wearable electronics, have been identified for the LiTE*Star battery cell where mirco Ampere-Hours of battery capacity can support the product’s worse case duty cycle. This low power combined with the low self discharge rate of the LiTE*STAR battery cell, support a “New Way of Thinking” relative to battery recharging. The fact that nano Amps to micro Amps can effectively charge the LiTE*STAR battery cell have resulted in feasible methods of capturing, accumulating and delivery of various forms of ambient energy as recharge power. This paper will provide an overview of the LiTE*STAR battery cell technology and an overview / status of innovative charge methods. Battery Cell Design / Construction & Performance Infinite Power Solutions has manufactured and delivered various cell configurations to OEM’s for evaluation.
