Abstract Regulations in fuel consumption and emission become more and more strict, it is required to give more research on finding methods of saving energy and reducing emissions, also, reducing energy loss of engine attachments is an effective method. Oil pump play a key role in engine lubrication system, it provides power to make oil flow for lubrication and cooling of moving parts in engine. Due to discharge effect of the pressure relief valve in oil pump, thus, traditional oil pump loses a lot of energy as engine works in a high speed period. On the contrary, variable displacement oil pump has a certain effect on energy-saving by reducing oil pump displacement directly when an engine is running in a high speed period. This article gives research on the structural characters and energy-saving effect on both rotor type and vane type of variable displacement oil pump.

pumped by a traditional pump will increase as the engine’s speed rises. In order to meet requirement of an engine’s performance and durability, oil pump is designed to ensure the engine’s lubrication requirement for engine idling condition. Thus, it causes an extra ability to pump oil in engine high-speed condition, moreover, the extra pump ability will cause a loss of engine power. The automobile companies all over the world are now keeping on researching to find out a way to reduce the displacement when an engine works on a high speed. The loss of power reduces significantly when the displacement of an oil pump decreases. Then the fuel consumption comes down so that the aim to save energy and reduce emission is reached. Figure 1 shows the contrast data of the friction power between a traditional oil pump and an engine under motoring condition. As Fig. 1 shows, the friction power of an oil pump takes 8 % of the friction power of an engine in average. A traditional oil pump usually loses a lot of extra energy by releasing excess lubricating oil through a pressure relief valve due to an excess capacity of pumping when it works in a high speed. A variable displacement oil pump reduces the loss of energy by decreasing the capacity for pumping oil when it runs in a high speed. The effec
