UK NIBSC to merge with MHRA The UK National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC) is set to merge with the MHRA. From 1 April 2012, the NIBSC will become a new ‘centre’ of the MHRA, alongside the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD). The NIBSC is currently part of the Health Protection Agency (HPA); however, it works closely with the MHRA in managing risks associated with biological medicines, facilitating development of new medicines and maintaining the UK’s expertise and ability to assure quality and safety of medicines in Europe and beyond. It is believed that the merger will strengthen the UK’s ability to compete internationally and better manage the risks and opportunities associated with future development, by taking advantage of the synergies that exist between the two organisations.
