Preface

This book “Virtual Power Plants and Electricity Markets: Decision Making Under Uncertainty” provides a number of relevant models to make optimal operation and planning strategies for virtual power plants (VPPs) participating in electricity markets. There has been a significant rise of interest in renewable units based on wind, solar, and photovoltaic energy in the last decades. These renewable units started to be developed with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, despite their benefits, the uncertainty associated with most of the renewable generating units, whose production varies depending on the meteorological phenomena, limits the participation of the owners of these units in different electricity markets. Under this condition, the owners are exposed to a significant level of market risks that may reduce their profitability and discourage them from active participation in electricity markets. A possible solution to mitigate the negative effects of the uncertainty
