Definition Visual Acuity (VA) is a measure of the finest high-contrast detail that the eye can resolve. The common measurement system is Snellen VA, measured using the familiar optometrist’s chart. VA is expressed as two figures, one above and one below a line, e.g. 6/12, the top figure representing the distance from the chart of the person being examined (expressed in metres or feet) and the lower figure referring to the smallest letters the person has been able to read (the larger the lower figure, the poorer the VA).

Visual Analogue Scale Definition A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) is an instrument used to measure a characteristic that is believed to range across a continuum of values and cannot be directly measured. For example, the amount of pain a patient may feel ranges across a continuum from none to severe pain. A VAS is usually a horizontal or vertical line with a scale from 0 (absence of the characteristic measured) to 100 (extreme value). The patient marks on the line the point that they feel represents their current state.
