It was 1995, in Dresden, Germany. I had stopped to linger over the display in a bookstore window. Suddenly, my eye caught the cover of a book with two pictures of spruce discs. My curiosity as a forester was piqued. The title read, “Holzfehler – Die Abweichungen von der normalen Beschaffenheit des Holzes” (“Wood Defects – Deviations from Standard Wood Structure”), by Hermann Knuchel.
