Foreword

This book makes an important contribution to one of the most significant challenges facing all those responsible for child welfare—how to improve the lives of young people moving on from care. A body of international research has shown that outcomes for children living in care are poor in comparison to those of other children, and this often casts a long shadow on their adult lives. Those making the journey from care to adulthood have more accelerated and compressed transitions than their peers, and are more likely to be disadvantaged in respect to their main pathways to adulthood: education, training and employment, accommodation and health and well-being. It was these findings, which, in 2003, led to the setting up of the International Research Network on Transitions to Adulthood from Care (INTRAC), bringing together, for the first time, researchers from Europe, the Middle East, Australia, Canada and the USA. This resulted in an initial mapping exer
