Cytisine antismoking drug market research m.pharm. Doroteya Naboko, PhD student; Professor Zlatka Dimitrova, DSc Abstract Over the last years the market of nicotine dependence drugs in Bulgaria showed significant dynamics in terms of development and growth. A research of the factors of development of this market segment, with emphasis placed on cytisine, as the only local product for nicotine dependence treatment, was carried out. Looking to find out the causes of development of the studied segment, we considered also the legislation changes, advertisement campaigns carried out by the producer of the cytisine product, as well some other factors. The results showed a complex involvement of the studied factors, but advertisement campaigns turned out to be the crucial factor determining the development of the sector of the nicotine dependence drugs. Objectives Antismoking drug sales. Cytisine sales in Bulgarian market. Methods In this research, we used the following analysis: market share analysis, drug analysis and legislation analysis. Results In 2005 cytisine share had already 90% of the nicotine dependence drug market in Bulgaria. Rx-to-OTC switching strategy of cytisine product was very successful for the product promotion. The cytisine sales increased considerably over the advertising campaign period. The impact of the Framework Convention signing and especially whether it influenced cytisine demand as antismoking product. The cytisine product demand started increasing and the demand went up considerably in the first months after the Regulation enforcement (clearly pronounced peak). Conclusions Taking legislation steps for reducing the devastating effects of smoking and increasing the cigarette prices had stimulating effects on giving up cigarettes. A particularly important role in nicotine dependence treatment played Ex Smoker educational and advertising campaign of cytisine producer and the expanded presentation of cytisine amongst smokers. The complex impacts of all factors increased cytisine demand and therefore it helped the development of the nicotine dependence drug market. Through the advertising campaign made a socially important contribution to reducing the use of tobacco products.
