Abstract Oily sludge contains high concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals, which seriously impact the environment and human health. How to dispose of and use the oily sludge has attracted an increasing amount of attention. This study introduces harmless and resource-based oily sludge treatment technologies. It summarizes the technologies from various aspects, such as the process principle, influencing factors, advantages, and disadvantages, and analyzes and summarizes the status quo of the development of the technologies. In comparison, the direction of processing technology development is discussed to provide reference for processing technology improvements, optimization, and efficiency improvements. Keywords Oily sludge . Treatment technology . Resource utilization . Review . Responsible Editor: Philippe Garrigues
Introduction A large amount of oily sludge is produced during the process of oilfield exploration, refining, gathering, and transportation, and is characterized by high oil content, fine particles, large viscosity, and dehydration and transportation difficulty (Nikkha h et al. 2 015; H assan zade h et al. 2 018; Lashkarbolooki and Ayatollahi 2018). The composition of oily sludge is extremely complex, containing high concentrations of total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals such as copper, zinc, chromium, mercury, chemical additives, and pathogenic microorganisms. It also contains benzene, phenols, anthracene, pyrene, and other fetid toxic substances (Yang et al. 2015; Wang et al. 2017; Chen et al. 2020a). It has been estimated that for every 1000 tons of oil produced, 5 tons of oily sludge will be produced (Silva et al. 2012). The global crude oil production was 4.45 billion tons in 2018 (Petroleum 2018), and the annual production of oily sludge in the world was approximately 2.23 × 10 10 kg Responsible editor: Philippe Garrigues * Dongmei Zhang [email protected] 1

according to calculations. China’s petrochemical industry produces approximately 3 × 109 kg of oily sludge every year (Xiao et al. 2019a). Oily sludge discharged with improper handling will lead to severe environmental pollution and affect human health due to its constituents (Hu et al. 2013; Fuentes et al. 2016; Taheri et al. 2019). In particular, the high concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in oily sludge has strong carcinogenic properties (Da Rocha et al. 2010; Obi et al. 2020). Oily sludge has great recycling value because of its rich petroleum substances (Huang et al. 2014; Zhang et al. 2018; Lin et al. 2018)
