The specialty of Pain Medicine is relatively new, when compared to more established fields. Consequently, the base of required knowledge and skill is in a constant state of expansion and modification. The core requirements for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited pain fellowships did not emerge until about 10 years ago and have since undergone multiple significant revisions. There has been a clear, unmet need for a standardized text to be used by fellows in ACGME- accredited pain fellowship programs in order to provide a clinically relevant narrative to their training, as well as help prepare them for certification exams.
