Agriculture is a vital sector of Nepal’s economy for the achievement of goals related to food security, employment generation and poverty reduction. However, this sector’s performance during the last two and half decades, as measured by the growth in total factor productivity, has lagged behind that of its South Asian neighbours. At the same time, as in other developing countries, the demand for food, particularly high-value food commodities, has increased due to rising incomes, urbanization and diet diversification. As domestic food production has not kept pace with rising food demand, the country has turned into a net importer of food, both staples and high-value commodities. The decade-long armed conflict and a long political transition that followed had an enormous adverse effect on the agriculture sector in Nepal.
