AMORPHOUS SILICON POSITION SENSOR FOR TELEPHONE TERMINAL TASHIRO TAKEDA AND SEIJIRO SANO Komatsu Ltd., Research Division, 1200 Manda Hiratsuka Kanagawa 254, Japan
ABSTRACT An amorphous silicon position sensitive detector (PSD) has been developed by utilization of uniform wide area photovoltaic generation characteristics. A series of technical data on design rules and performance are firstly presented. Secondly an application to telephone terminal message board system is described. The telephone terminal equipped with an amorphous silicon position sensitive detector for a keyboard as an input device implemented under a liquid crystal display (LCD) as an output device can transmit not only voice but also graphic information. This is one of the remarkable applications of an amorphous silicon position sensitive detector which makes a telephone a low-cost, easy-to-use and graphic information medium.
Introduction A number of research works in the applications of an amorphous silicon(a-Si) as a new material have been carried and a solar cell has now reached the practical application stage. We developed a position sensitive detector(PSD) for the other application of the a-Si, which has a larger light receiving area and is more low cost than a monocrystalline silicon PSD. So far Komatsu has applied it to the sensor of the steering control system for a tunnel machine. In this paper, we present a telephone terminal for an advanced information society, which we can communicate with anybody, anywhere at the touch of an a-Si PSD. This telephone terminal can send and receive different forms of information such as voice, image and characters through a telephone network. The a-Si PSD for an input device such as a keyboard or a graphic tablet, a liquid crystal display for a output device, a signal processing system, a telephone and a line signal processor including a modem are integrated all in a unit about the same size as a conventional telephone. The telephone is excellent for two way communication and is used in countries worldwide but it can not accomodate graphics to be inconvienient to talk about the routs on a map or the configurations of articles. A personal computer is excellent for processing and transmitting data but it too is unable to transmit graphic information easily and is sometimes difficult to use. On the other hand a facsimile handles graphic information but is unable to process data or connect to computer information networks. We have developed the telephone terminal "Kom-Tel" which has the following features. (1)A user friendly telephone (2) A graphic terminal like a facsimile (3) A data terminal which can communicate with computers
