The management of anorectal disease dates back over several millennia and continues to represent a challenge for both the patient and the physician. The earliest known reference to these disorders is seen in the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus that originated in 3000–2500 BCE when practitioners like the high priest Pepyankh, known as Iry, served as the Pharaohs’ palace physician and chief of the medical corps.
