Preface
Cardiovascular disorders account for the increased morbidity and mortality that accompanies a large number of diseases, including diabetes mellitus, obesity, hypertension, nephropathies and rheumatoid arthritis. Recent progress in knowledge has led to an increased understanding of the pathophysiologic mechanisms that underlie vascular alterations in these diseases, the evidence being that a wide range of factors are likely to participate to a variable degree in each of them. Aim of this book is to describe the physiology of macro- and microcirculation together with their interactions. It is also to discuss the structural and functional alterations that macro- and microcirculation develop with diseases, with attention to their hemodynamic, metabolic, humoral, hormonal, inflammatory, as well as genetic or environmental nature. Emphasis is placed on recent notions, such as the involvement of arterial stiffness in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, as well as in the age-related alterations of systemic and renal vasculature; the importance of mineral-bone-vascular interactions; the diagnostic and prognostic significance of new noninvasive measures of va
