Bisphosphonates Jaw osteonecrosis: case report A 64-year-old woman, who had a drug history of HRT and long-term steroid treatments, began receiving an unspecified oral bisphosphonate in 2003 for osteoporosis prophylaxis [dosage not stated]. While receiving the bisphosphonate, she experienced non-healing mouth lesions, which persisted for 2 years and were complicated by recurrent infections. She required IV antibiotics and numerous dental procedures. She was diagnosed with osteonecrosis of the jaw in July 2007 [time to reaction onset not clearly stated]. The bisphosphonate was subsequently withdrawn and she received long term antibiotics. She improved slowly, with her jaw osteonecrosis showing evidence of healing in January 2008. Author comment: "Other risk factors for [osteonecrosis of the jaw] include heavy metals exposure, steroid use, alcohol abuse, malignancies, poor dental hygiene, and dental procedures. Exogenous oestrogen has also been implicated." Chow SC, et al. A case of jaw osteonecrosis in a patient on oral bisphosphonate treatment. 2008 Annual European Congress of Rheumatology : abstr.
