With the reduction in mortality attributable to cardiovascular disease in the developed world, the burden of chronic lung disease is becoming increasingly apparent. Globally, respiratory diseases are amongst the leading causes of mortality. Significant challenges exist in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic lung disease. There is now growing awareness that chronic lung disease is a distinct risk factor for cardiovascular disease, akin to immunologic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Given the overlapping symptoms and signs, considerable challenges exist in the recognition of cardiovascular disease in the presence of chronic lung disease.
