Northwestern University Chapter Plans Activities The Northwestern University Chapter of the Materials Research Society, chartered in April 1989, held its first "tech-wide" organizational meeting in May and received a supportive turnout from several différent departments. Besides involving faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in ail its activities, the Northwestern Chapter hopes to involve ail the engineering departments, including materials science, chemical, mechanical, civil, biomédical, electrical, and possibly industrial engineering as well as chemistry and physics. The chapter plans to hâve monthly speakers, including industrial and académie speakers as well as graduate students. At the chapter's first meeting on July 13, 1989, Steven Grubb from Amoco Technologies discussed "Fiber Optic Lasers." Other planned activities include paper contests and trips to several local industries. In addition, several students submitted abstracts for the upcoming MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. For information about the Northwestern University Chapter, please contact: Hilary L. Hampsch, Department of Materials Science, Northwestern University, 2145 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL 60208; téléphone (312)491-8132.

Members of Florida University Chapter Reap Awards In 1988, five undergraduate student members (and many other graduate students) of the MRS Florida University Chapter attended the MRS meetings in Reno and Boston. At the 1988 MRS Spring Meeting in Reno, Bruce Zoitos received an MRS Graduate Student Award for his présentation, "The Rôle of Surface Layers in the Leaching Behavior of Glass." This year another MRS University Chapter member, Maggie Puga, captured first prize in a student paper contest sponsored by the American \focuum Society (Southeast Région) for her paper on "The Effect of Heavy Métal Contaminants on the Physical and Electrical Characteristics of SIMOX Structures." Chartered in December 1987, the Florida University Chapter was organized to foster interaction among students pursuing the electronic materials option in materials science, and récent chapter activities included a field trip to Harris Semiconductor in Melbourne, Florida. Laboratory visits were also coordinated for the 26th Annual Florida Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium, and during this year's advising colloquim for preengineering students the chapter spon60
