Rochester Chapter Solicits Employers for Job Placement at 1995 MRS Spring Meeting A grant from the Special Projects Subcommittee of the Materials Research Society enabled the University of Rochester Chapter to manage the Job Placement Services at the 1995 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco. The Chapter members who participated were Michal Freedhoff, Karen Moore, Marie Inman and Sujeet Kumar. Anita Alanko, another Chapter member, assisted with on-site operations. Traditionally, the Spring Meeting Job Placement Services consisted of a message board for employers to communicate with prospective employees. The Chapter members, however, innovated another approach. Through a library search, they located 500 materials research companies in the Bay Area (San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland). The members mailed information, encouraging the companies to participate in the Job Placement Services, soliciting 34 job postings. The members also scheduled interviews between prospective employees and participating companies. Altogether, the Job Placement Services reported 99 positions advertised by 36 employers, 134 attending applicants, 83
non-attending applicants, and 20 requests by employers to schedule formal interviews. The graduate students enjoyed planning and operating the program and recommend it to other University Chapters. In addition to organizational and management experiences, the students had the opportunity to talk about their own upcoming career decisions as they spoke with many of the participating employers. The participating members, through MRS, have published a report in which they compiled a checklist and guidelines of the necessary steps involved in managing the Services. University Chapter Homepages Available on the Internet Currently University Chapters from the University of Illinois at Urbana (http: //stimpy.cen.uiuc.ediKSO/soc/mrs/), Texas A & M University (http://tamsun.tamu.

Rochester (http://www.optics.rochester. edu:8080/MRS/homepage.html) have homepages on the World Wide Web, and each can also be accessed through the MRS homepage (http://www.mrs.org/). Each homepage introduces its respective Chapter and lists information regarding student and faculty members and their areas of research, Chapter officers, and activities. Among the activities described are student seminars, member displays (similar to poster sessions) and outreach programs to local high schools. The Chapter at the University of Illinois at Urbana is developing a "Virtual Poster Session" in which members from various Chapters create their individual posters which are then linked. The first page of the link would include a title, brief abstract, a link to the full "Poster," and an e-mail address for the auth
