Alabama Chapter Hosts Student Materials Research Conférence The Alabama A&M University Chapter of MRS is hosting the First North Alabama Student Materials Research Conférence April 13, 1991 at the Department of Physics, Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, Alabama. Graduate and undergraduate students doing research in materials science and related areas are encouraged to participate. Only students are eligible to receive prizes for their présentations, but everyone is invited to attend. Abstracts are being accepted for poster présentations only. The conférence is co-sponsored by the Alabama A&M University Chapter of MRS and ASM International (Huntsville). For more information, contact: Hemanta K. In other Alabama A&M Chapter activities, members toured the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Alabama in Birmingham last

year. They also met with NASA payload and mission specialists from the International Microgravity Laboratory IML-1 when they were on campus for crystal growth training. Student member Z. Yang received financial support from the Chapter to présent a paper at the 1990 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco. Also, several Chapter members participated in the Fourth Annual Alabama Materials Conférence, October 2-3, 1990 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Chapter officers elected for the 1990-91 school year are: Hemanta K. Jena, président; John Idesatima, vice président; and Stephen D. Pearson, secretary/treasurer. Faculty advisers are Daryush lia and Lawrence Holland.

Three New University Chapters Receive Charters

As part of the Spécial Projects Program funded by the MRS Académie Affairs Committee, the Alfred University Chapter received funding to make a videotape on "Rheology of Mud" to introduce the idea of rheology to high school students and undergraduates. The tape will be about 20 minutes long with a completion date set for the 1991 Spring Meeting. D

Carnegie Mellon University, Texas A&M University, and the University of Arizona hâve formed University Chapters of the Materials Research Society. After approval by the MRS Council of their pétitions, the three schools officially received their charters at the 1990 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston.
