Mania: case report A 26-year-old man developed mania following treatment with chloroquine for malaria. The man received chloroquine [route and dosage not stated] for malaria; he developed excessive talking, irritability, over-activity, abusiveness, altered sleep pattern, argumentativeness and grandiosity on the third day of receiving chloroquine. Previous treatment with chloroquine, in the preceding 3 years, had also resulted in the development of manic-like symptoms. Haloperidol was initiated, and his symptoms regressed within 2 weeks. At follow-up, after 3 month, no recurrences of manic symptoms were reported. A diagnosis of mood disorder with manic features was made. Author comment: "This is the first case report of recurrent mania with chloroquine." Bhatia MS, et al. A case of chloroquine-induced recurrent mania.
