This book deals with the evolution of watershed development (WSD) in the state of Andhra Pradesh, a history that also tells us of its future relevance to India. Extremely well-researched and full of authentic data, all of it primary and from the field, this book will serve to open the eyes of those concerned with making policy relating to agriculture, water management, food and nutrition security, rural employment, migration and participative democratic self-governance. I say this for many reasons, including the fact that the question whether there was going to be a serious possibility of a veritable exodus from agriculture as an occupation itself was raised by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao in the mid-1990s. The seriousness of this would later manifest itself as a phenomenon of continual suicides by farmers, including in Andhra Pradesh, a situation taken note of by India’s National Human Rights Commission that ordered an investigation into it with me as its Special Rapporteur.
