Crystallographic Fatigue Fracture in Copper Single Crystals R. YESKE AND J. WEERTMAN In an examination of crystallographic effects on fatigue c r a c k growth in pre-stressed copper s i n g l e crystals, ~ crystallographic facets were observed on the fracture surface. This note discusses the conditions of facet formation and t h e i r effect on c r a c k growth r a t e . Edge-notched fatigue specimens were prepared frompre-stressed copper single crystals with the orientations shown in Fig. 1. Nearly one hundred fatigue tests were conducted on t h e s e samples at 295 and 77 K in a high p u r i t y , dry nitrogen environment. A 40 Hz pulsating tension load was produced with an electrohydraulic fatigue machine, w i t h nominal stresses am =~cra in the r a n g e 25 --< ¢rm -< 148 M P a and 19 -< aa -
