Foreword

The book by Dr. Guillaume Leturcq, on Dams in Brazil, is an important contribution. It is the first book to discuss the development of hydroelectricity in Brazil and to focus on both the south of Brazil and the north. It provides a rich historical review of these developments and ties these developments to the geopolitical ambitions of Brazil’s military and civilian leaders since the 1940s, and unquestioned since then by its presidents and leadership. Even the Workers’ Party, led by Lula, did not question these priorities during their 12 years in office. The most emblematic dams discussed by the author were started during the military dictatorship and were part of the Giant Brazil plans for rapid economic development and accelerated industrializati
