Preface
In a previous book, I suggested that, rather than becoming transfixed by late nineteenth-century understandings of modernity, it might be better to recall an earlier “modern age” when what it meant to be modern was being defined not just against but precisely in the middle of the “Roman trinity” of authority, religion, and tradition. This new book follows my own advice. The book is about Enlightenment culture in Spanish America before Independence—in short, signs of the colonial-modern there where, according to Hegel, one would least expect to find them. It explores these tremulous signs in writings from five cultural fields, if their fledgling status permits such a designation: science, history, the periodical press, law, and literature. The writings dealt with are as follows: the scientific treatises and travel journals of the 1735 geodesic expedition to the Kingdom of Quito by French Academicians and Spanish naval officers to determine the shape of the earth (Chap. 2); European Enlightenment philosophical histories of the Americas and a Mexican Jesuit rejoinder (Chap. 3); a year’s worth of articles from Peruvian period
