Technical product information found on the Web sites of most pharmaceutical companies is limited to the package insert. In an effort to give health care professionals expanded access to technicul information. the Professional Product Information department at Roche Laboratories Inc. created a Web site that provides a broad variety of drug it$ormation, including on- and off-label information on products marketed by Roche. The Professional Product Information Web site is designed to provide clinicians with the same irlforniatioti that would othericise be provided in response to a telephone call or a nritten inquiry. The development of this Web site required the collaboration of several departments including lair: regulatoy affairs, technology management, business information systems, and media design management. It is important to note that the drug information supplied on the majority of pharmaceutical company Web sites is limited to product package labeling (2- 11). Although the package insert can be quite useful to health care professionals, this information may not suffice in answering all of their questions regarding a particular medication. In order to meet the needs of clinicians who use the Internet, companies must offer them the same information that would otherwise be provided in response to a telephone call or a written inquiry.
