Development of City Logistics in China Jianhua Xiao
City logistics plays an important role in the “last-mile” of modern logistics, improves the livelihood of urban citizens, and ensures the normal operation of urban society and economy. In recent years, China continues to optimize its city logistics development environment, improve its city logistics infrastructures, and make innovations in its urban terminal distribution models. The country is gradually establishing efficient, green and convenient service system of city logistics. This chapter includes four sections. Section 7.1 presents an overview of city logistics, including the major characteristics, operating network, operators and classification of distribution models. Section 7.2 discusses the development environment of city logistics in China, including market demand, policy measures, regulations and standards. Section 7.3 introduces the current development of city logistics in China, including market size, level of professional services, building of distribution network, and public information platform. Section 7.4 points out the existing problems and future development trend of city logistics in China.

Overview of City Logistics
City logistics refers to the physical flow of objects in the city, goods distribution between city and peripheral regions, and the process of disposing of city wastes. City logistics focuses on city and serves the demands of corporate production and residents’ life in the city. This chapter mainly discusses city logistics activities that meet the demand of urban residents’ life.

Main Characteristics of City Logistics
Contrasting to the long-distance trunk route transport in regional logistics, city logistics mainly refers to logistics activities that occur in the city, which have shorter transport distance. In addition, city logistics are predominately by highway transport, not involving aviation, railway or waterway transport. City logistics is featured by small batches, more varieties and high frequency. With the growing of the economy and the improving of the purchasing power of urban residents, consumers are now demanding more varieties of products in smaller batches and higher frequency. In particular, as B2C and C2C models of e-commerce evolve, orders are becoming more fragmented. Correspondingly, city delivery is exhibiting the same characteristics. City logistics involves numerous nodes and complex distribution system; it mainly serves the urban trade and commercial enterprises and urban resident consumers.
