Preface to the Second Edition

A lot of things have changed in consumer electronics and the technology that enables them in the 10 years since I wrote the first edition of this book in 2007. In 2007, the first iPhone was released, and small hard disk drives were being used to store music on portable music players. Today, all mobile devices use flash memory for storage, and consumers are wearing digital watches and even digital rings. Consumers are using the Internet to stream videos and store their content or for accessing application from the cloud. As a result of these developments, the second edition of this book had undergone significant modifications. In all the chapters, content data rates and capacities have been updated including today’s 4K as well as tomorrow’s 8K content.
