Preface and Acknowledgement
This volume is an outcome of two conferences organised in the JuliusMaximilians-University of Würzburg on 7th and 8th December 2017 and in Jawaharlal Nehru University on 15th and 16th March 2018. The conference in Würzburg focused on key conceptual categories that provide the analytical frameworks for making comparisons among contemporary democracies. The papers presented in the conference focused on constitutionalism, nationalism, democracy, development, political culture and secularism. The conference in Jawaharlal Nehru University brought together presentations on specific dimensions of constitutional democracy around which contemporary debates on constitutional frameworks and democratic practices have accumulated. The papers presented in the conference engaged with questions pertaining to the idea of transformative constitutionalism in countries making the transition to constitutional democracies concerning themselves with the Indian and German experiences.
