Figure 1 compares a microporous polystyrene foam to a leached borosilicate glass. Although phase separation is evoked to explain the morphology of both systems, the resulting domain structure is distinctly different. The challenge is to understand these differences and exploit various chemical and physical processes to tailor porosity for specific applications. These processes often occur far from equilibrium, presenting new challenges to both modeling and processing.
