First reports of spontaneous orgasm and sexual dysfunction: case report A 17-year-old girl with epilepsy, who was receiving levetiracetam, received increasing doses of escitalopram [initial dose 5mg; frequency not stated] for about 6 months for DSM-IV-TR major depression. Her escitalopram dose was increased to 10mg [frequency not stated]. Introduction of escitalopram was well tolerated. However, she developed iatrogenic serotonergic sexual dysfunction [duration of therapy to reaction onset not stated]. Following treatment with escitalopram 10mg and levetiracetam, she frequently experienced spontaneous orgasms, increased libido and sexual sleep. Following discontinuation of escitalopram, her sexual dysfunction normalised. Ruiz-Lazaro PM, et al. Escitalopram plus levetiracetam and spontaneous orgasms in an female adolescent: a case report. » Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase, Medline and Embase did not reveal any previous case reports of spontaneous orgasm or sexual dysfunction associated with escitalopram. The WHO Adverse Drug Reactions database contained 12 reports of abnormal sexual function and seven reports of abnormal orgasm associated with escitalopram.
