Lupus-like nephritis in a child: case report A 5-year-old boy developed lupus-like nephritis during treatment with etanercept for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. He was treated with etanercept [route and dosage not stated] and had complete articular remission. However, 3 months after starting the drug, he presented with arterial hypertension and peripheral oedema. Laboratory tests revealed acute renal failure and proteinuria. His etanercept was withdrawn and he received supportive renal failure measures and prednisolone, resulting in improvement. A biopsy revealed a lupus-like acute membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. Positive serologies included ANA. Three weeks later, his proteinuria had decreased markedly and his renal failure had resolved. Author comment: "The authors report the case of lupuslike nephritis induced by etanercept in a child with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)." Rodrigues M, et al.
