Preface
This book contains the articles presented at the 11th International Conference on the Simulation of Adaptive Behavior (SAB 2010), which was held at the Museum d’Histoire Naturelle and at the University Pierre et Marie Curie of Paris during August 25–27, 2010. On August 28, the attendees moved to Le Clos Luc´e – the last home of Leonardo da Vinci – where the 20th anniversary of the conference was celebrated. The objective of the biennial SAB Conference is to bring together researchers in computer science, artificial intelligence, artificial life, complex systems, robotics, neurosciences, ethology, evolutionary biology, and related fields so as to further our understanding of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow natural and artificial animals to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. Adaptive behavior research is distinguished by its focus on the modelling and creation of complete animal-like systems, which – however simple at the moment – may be one of the best routes to understanding intelligence in natural and artificial syste
