Foreword

It is with great pleasure that I write this foreword for my colleague and friend Dr. Michael Portman on this new offering Generalized Anxiety Disorder Across the Life Span: An Integrative Approach. It is rare to find a clinician who also happens to enjoy research and is so well versed in the empirical literature on such a complex disorder. He has been able, in equal measure, to find a meaningful way to transmit in his writing this conceptual understanding in a precise and elegant manner to others. Another outstanding achievement of this book is the fact that it addresses generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) across the life span covering not only the theoretical underpinnings of GAD, but the psychosocial and pharmacological treatments – both standard ones and newer developments. This publication is a much needed guide and resource, without falling prey to just being another conventional and manualized treatment approach. Even though this text eschews simple formulations, it does offer a broad and integrative perspective on the multiple options available for the mental health practitioner and others in related professions. The academic researcher and advanced graduate student in psychopathology will also benefit from this publication. In discussing the ideas behind this text with Dr. Portman over the years, I have been impressed with his initiative i
