The dramatic progress in poverty reduction in China over the past three decades is well known. According to the World Bank, more than 500 million people were lifted out of extreme poverty as China’s poverty rate fell from 88% in 1981 to 3.1% in 2017 (World Bank 2017). This extraordinary achievement accounts for three-quarters of the reduction in global poverty. It was delivered by a combination of a rapidly expanding labour market, driven by a sustained period of economic growth, and a series of government initiatives mainly affecting rural China. These 500 million people should not be seen only as a statistic; they are human beings seeking a better life for themselves and their families rather than the life they had previously known—of hunger, sickness, and illiteracy. Our story revolves around Grandma Zhen, born in 1932, a time of war and famine, who in spite of all the difficulties managed to bring up eight children to flourish in modern China. We did
