We owe our thanks and gratitude to a number of colleagues and friends, without whom this book would not have been possible. First and foremost we are indebted to Dr. Debbie Jack whose foresight enabled the seminar from which the book sprung. That seminar, convened by Paul Gibbs in the summer of 2017, provided the inspiration and impetus for the collection here. The focus of that seminar—at least explicitly—was not on hope per se, but was rather on compassion and higher education. As our conversations grew and extended into related territories, however, it became clear that underlying, or at least connected with, each of our discussions were notions of hope. Though we understood and approached hope differently, all in attendance centred hope as central to and for optimistic and compassionate perspectives on higher education.
