Appalachian coal mining has been prominent during a significant period in American history. Appalachian coal was essential to the expanding American economy in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Like other industries shaping America during this period, coal mining had positive and negative impacts on the land and people. Appalachian coal fueled the industrial development in the eastern USA during much of the twentieth century, including steel mills and manufacturing that became dominant producers of goods for the world. Appalachian coal also provided the low-priced electricity essential to power this industrial development and to improve the quality of life enjoyed by many. Appalachian coal is among the highest quality coals in the world and as such was shipped throughout the USA to the northeast and south into the Gulf states for electric generators, steel manufacturing, and other uses.
