Few would argue the benefits of telemedicine to the patient, society, the community, the healthcare system, healthcare professionals, and funders. Despite the obvious, the uptake of telemedicine over the last three decades has remained slow, nascent in some parts of the developed world and a dream of unmet potential in the developing world. It is too often inhibited by bureaucracy, regulation, fear of change, lack of awareness, and ignorance. This is particularly unfortunate for the developing world in which I work, where the unmet healthcare burden is greatest. Increasing general awareness and knowledge of telemedicine in all settings is imperative. The book’s editors, Ron Merrell, Chuck Doarn, and Rifat Latifi, have impeccable telemedicine credentials and are acknowledged leaders in the field, having been at the coalface for many years.
