131 Interstellar Matter (Molecular Clouds, Reflection Nebulae, etc.), Star Formation Determination of the star formation rate by using the integral spectrum of a stellar system. 0. K. Sil'chenko. Pis'ma Astron. Zh., Tom 10, No.1, p. 19-26 (1984). In Russian. English translation in Soviet Astron. Lett., Vol. 10. A new method is proposed to determine star formation rate, metallicity and initial mass function of stars of a galaxy from its integral energy distribution. The method is applied to the elliptical galaxy NGC 4649 and to the central regions of Sc-galaxies NGC 628, 1637, 4321, 5194. 131.001
131.002 Ion composition of cooling interstellar gas. AI. A. Suchkov, Yu. A. Shchekinov. Pis'ma Astron. Zh., Tom 10, No.1, p. 35-41 (1984).1n Russian. English translation in Soviet Astron. Lett., Vol. 10. It is shown that the ion composition of cooling interstellar gas may differ significantly from the equilibrium composition and thus the estimates of its temperature based on the comparison of observed densities ofhigh-{;harged ions with the theoretical ones obtained in ionization equilibrium computations may be erroneous. It is suggested that the observed absorption lines of ions C IV, S IV, S VI, NV and 0 VI may be formed in relative cool (T;;, 104 · 2 K) old supernova remnants. On the structure of dark interstellar clouds in the direction of the open cluster I C 4996. A. Pucinskas. Vilniaus Astron. Obs. Biul., No. 65, p. 3-16 (1983). In Russian. The catalogue of Pucinskas (1982) is used to investigate the surface distribution of B-type stars in the direction of the open cluster IC 4996. The very uneven distribution of B-type stars is probably caused by comparatively small but very dense dust clouds situated at 1 kpc and giving Av > sm. One of such clouds seems to cover a part of the open cluster IC 4996. The dependence of the interstellar extinction on distance in the direction of the variable stars P Cyg and V454 Cyg and the Wolf-Rayet stars HD 193077 and HDE 228766 is determined. 131.003
Interstellar extinction law in the Taurus dark clouds. E. Meistas. Vilniaus Astron. Obs. Biul., No. 65, p. 42- 54 (1983). In Russian. Strongly reddened early-type stars in the Taurus dark clouds measured in seven colors of the Vilnius photometric system and in the system UBVRIJHKL are used to investigate the interstellar extinction law within 0.35 and 3.5 11m. The majority of the stars show either a normal or a close to normal extinction law. However, several stars in the near ultraviolet part of the spectrum show considerable deviations from the normal law of both signs. 131.004
Submillimeter astronomy and the problem of star formation. M. Harwit. Comments Astrophys., Vol. 10, No.2, p. 65-73 (1984). Sources that have traditionally been called "protostars", because they were strong emitters of infrared radiation embedded in dust clouds, are now recognized to be "newly formed" stars instead. Recent developments in submillimeter astronomy will 131.005
