E-MRS1998 Spring Meeting to be Held June 16-19 in France The European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) 1998 Spring Meeting will be held in Strasbourg, France on June 16-19, 1998. The Industrial Exhibition is scheduled for June 17-18. E-MRS conference chairs are P. Glasow (Germany) and Y.I. Nissim (France). Over a thousand European materials scientists, engineers, physicists, and chemists as well as scientists from overseas, especially from Japan and the United States, are expected to attend the conference to present the latest scientific and technical reports in 14 symposia, providing a balance from fundamental and applied research, development, and technology with medium- and short-term perspectives. A Proceedings Volume will be published by Elsevier/ North Holland.

Following is a list of symposium titles: • Defects in Silicon: Hydrogen • Light Emission from Silicon: Progress Toward Si-Based Optoelectronics • Growth, Characterization and Applications of Bulk II-Vis • Thin Films Epitaxial Growth and Nanostructures • Thin Films Material for Large Area Electronics • Technique and Challenges for 300 mm Silicon: Processing, Characterization, Modeling, and Equipments • Surface Processing: Laser, Lamp, Plasma • Materials Aspects in Microsystem Technologies • Rapid Thermal Processing • Ion Implantation into Semiconductors, Oxides, and Ceramics

• Carbon-Based Materials for Microelectronics • Nitrides and Related Wide Bandgap Materials • Molecular Photonics and Optical Telecommunications: Materials, Physics, and Device Technology • Material and Processes for Submicron Technologies The preregistration deadline is May 18, 1998. The Conference Secretariat is P. Siffert, E-MRS, BP 20, 67037 Strasbourg Cedex 2, France; 33-3-88-10-65-43; fax 33-3-88-10-6293; e-mail [email protected].

IUMRS International Conference in Asia Held in Makuhari, Japan The 4th International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) International Conference in Asia was held in Makuhari, Japan on September 16-18, 1997. The meeting was organized by the Materials Research Society of Japan (MRS-J). Makuhari, which is on the waterfront of Tokyo Bay, is a planned city with an emphasis on technology. The central region of the city has many modern structures connected by an elevated walkway. The conference was held in the Oversees Vocational Training Association building, and the facilities were very congenial for the program. The conference included 21 symposia (see sidebar) on a wide range of materials topics. Over 1,000 papers were presented, including invited talks, and oral- and poster-contributed papers. Attendees were largely from Asia, with a significant number of participants from Europe, the United States, and other countries. Many of the sessions had full rooms and lively discussion. The poster sessions, which were held in the afternoon and evening, were also exceedingly well-attended; and here, again, there was in-depth discussion. Representatives from the U.S. National Science Foundation attended with an interest in the conference
