Foreword

When Jorge Alió invited me to write the introduction to this fascinating book, I was both honoured and delighted. The task brought together three components which have made a significant impact upon the world of corneal disease and refractive surgery, namely a better understanding of keratoconus and corneal biomechanics together with the lifelong contributions of Jorge Alió. For science to better understand the nature of any given problem, it is often best to investigate extremes of that problem. Fortunately most of the world’s population possess corneas whose biological and biomechanical properties fall within defined limits; however, there are a significant number within the pathological group defined as keratoconus whereby the mechanical properties are well outside the normal range. This book gathers together our knowledge of keratoconus and in doing so allows a far more comprehensive appreciation of deviation from the norm and how that comes about. The volume start
