PREFACE These notes are based on lectures given at the Special Session on Knot Theory and Manifolds at the summer 1983 meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society in Vancouver, June 2-4.

The contributed papers have been refereed, but the editor must

take responsiblity for errors.

I would like to thank Roberta Egby, Wendy Spaxman

and Sylvia Henley for assistance with the preparation of this volume and wolfgang Holzmann for help with proof reading.

Finally, thanks are due to the participants who made the meeting such a lively one and to the Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the University of British Columbia Mathematics Department and SUMMS for financial help.
