The genesis for this volume lies in the 8th Conference of the International Society for First World War Studies, which was held in Trento and Padua, Italy in September 2015. The theme of ‘Landscapes of War’ was proposed by John Horne during the Society’s 7th Conference in Paris and provided the basis for an extremely stimulating event.
