Methylthioninium chloride Green discolouration of urine in an elderly patient: case report A 77-year-old woman developed green discolouration of urine after receiving methylthioninium chloride [methylene blue]. One week after a hemicolectomy, the woman received an injection of methylthioninium chloride [dose not stated] via a nasogastric tube, to search for a possible fistula. Subsequently, her urine was discoloured green [time to reaction onset not stated]. The colour of her urine reverted to normal after the dye had been passed. Author comment: "Based on the temporal relationship between usage of methylene blue and transient green discoloration of urine, and lack of other possible known causes after thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical history and drug profile, it suggests that methylene blue was the etiology of green urine in our patient."
