12 Monitoring and Controlling the Project Work PMP Exam Objectives
What It Really Means
4.1 Measure project performance
Measure project performance using appropriate tools and techniques in order to identify and quantify any variances and corrective actions. Here, it really means that you must understand the Monitor and Control Project Work process, including the earned value analysis technique, variance analysis, trend analysis, and creating change requests to maintain course or bring the project back on track.
4.2 Manage changes
Manage changes to the project by following the change management plan in order to ensure that project goals remain aligned with business needs. It means that you should know how change requests are handled in the Perform Integrated Change Control process inside out, and how the requests are created in the Monitor and Control Project Work process, as well as other monitor and control change processes, such as the Control Procurement process. Chapter 12 | Monitoring and Controlling the Project Work
PMP Exam Objectives
What It Really Means
4.3 Verify that project deliverables conform to the quality standards
Verify that project deliverables conform to the quality standards established in the quality management plan by using appropriate tools and techniques to meet project requirements and business needs. You must understand how to use the Control Quality process to ensure conformance to the quality standards included in the project management plan. You must understand all the quality control tools, such as control charts, cause and effect diagrams, root-cause analysis, statistical sampling, and inspections.
4.4 Monitor and assess risk
Monitor and assess risk by determining whether exposure has changed and evaluating the effectiveness of response strategies in order to manage the impact of risks and opportunities on the project. You need to know that you must actively monitor the identified risks and identify and respond to new risks as they appear. You must understand the risk monitoring and controlling process called Monitor and Control Risks. You should also be familiar with risk response techniques and strategies, such as acceptance, transference, and mitigation, discussed in Chapter 7.
4.7 Monitor procurement activities
Monitor procurement activities according to the procurement plan in order to verify compliance with project objectives. Understand the Control Procurement process discussed in this chapter.
You need to continually monitor and control your project—that is, monitor and control the project activities against the project management plan and project performance baseline. This is because executing a project means executing the project work according to the project management plan based on some baselines, such as a schedule baseline, a scope baseline, and a cost baseline. In general, monitoring means watching the course, and controlling means taking
