Drug intoxication leading to death: 29 case reports In a retrospective study of autopsy reports of 31 patients between 2010 and 2011, 29 patients [ages and sexes not stated] were described, who died of drug intoxication following suicide with an overdose of alprazolam, amitriptyline, atracurium-besilate, biperiden, carbamazepine, chlorphenamine, chlorpromazine, citalopram, clomipramine, diazepam, dipyrone, doxylamine, fentanyl, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, hydroxyzine, lidocaine, maprotiline, metformin, metoclopramide, mianserin, midazolam, mirtazapine, nordazepam, nortriptyline, olanzapine, pentobarbital, phenytoin, propofol, quetiapine, sertraline, tianeptine, valproic-acid or verapamil. All the patients, who were depressive and overweight, committed suicide by ingestion of an overdose of metformin (3 patients), pentobarbital (1 patient), fentanyl (1 patient), amitriptyline (1 patient), quetiapine (1 patient), valproic-acid (1 patient), hydroxyzine (2 patients), citalopram (1 patient), carbamazepine (1 patient), maprotiline and clomipramine (1 patient), doxylamine and chlorpromazine (1 patient), verapamil and quetiapine (1 patient), amitriptyline and nortriptyline (1 patient), tianeptine and mirtazapine (1 patient), propofol and atracurium besilate (1 patient), midazolam and lidocaine (1 patient), nordazepam and diazepam (1 patient), verapamil and quetiapine (1 patient), chlorphenamine, lidocaine and dipyrone (1 patient), biperiden, clomipramine and sertraline (1 patient), amitriptyline, nortriptyline and carbamazepine (1 patient), chlorpromazine and biperiden (1 patient), citalopram, sertraline, alprazolam and quetiapine (1 patient), olanzapine, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine and clomipramine (1 patient), diazepam, pentobarbital, quetiapine, phenytoin and valproic-acid (1 patient) or amitriptyline, nortriptyline, mianserin, sertraline, citalopram and metoclopramide (1 patient). The drug levels ranged 0.117–963.157 µg/mL. Two patients had also consumed alcohol [ethanol] concurrently. All the patients died due to drug intoxication. Author comment: "The goal of this study was to determine the drugs of choice, the preferred routes of administration and the time to death among depressive disorder patients who have committed suicide by drug overdose."
