Drug overdose and coma: 10 case reports In a retrospective review of 43 patients admitted to Mater ICU Hospital, Ireland between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2006, 10 patients (7 males and 3 females) aged 17–54 years were described, who exhibited abnormal Glasgow outcome score following overdose with methadone, amfetamine, paracetamol, unspecified antidepressants, unspecified barbiturates, unspecified opioidanalgesics, unspecified benzodiazepines, unspecified β-adrenergic-receptor-antagonists [dosages, routes, durations of treatments to reactions onsets and outcomes not stated]. Patient 2 (a 48-year-old man): The man was admitted to an ICU in Ireland following overdose of methadone and unspecified benzodiazepines. At admission, his acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) score was found to be 11, Glasgow outcome score was 4 and Karnofsky score was 60. He remained in hospital for 19 days and was discharged eventually. At a follow-up, he was found to be alive. Patient 4 (a 33-year-old woman): The woman was admitted to the ICU in Ireland following overdose of amfetamine [amphetamine], methadone, unspecified benzodiazepines and cocaine. At admission, her APACHE II score was found to be 16, Glasgow outcome score was 2 and Karnofsky score was 60. She remained in hospital for 8 days was discharged eventually. At a follow-up, she was found to be alive. Patient 20 (a 54-year-old man): The man was admitted to the ICU in Ireland following overdose of paracetamol, unspecified benzodiazepines, unspecified barbiturates and unspecified opioid-analgesics. At admission, his APACHE II score was found to be 5, Glasgow outcome score was 5 and Karnofsky score was 80. He remained in hospital for 2 days and was discharged eventually. At a follow-up, he was found to be alive. Patient 23 (a 25-year-old woman): The woman was admitted to the ICU in Ireland following overdose of paracetamol and unspecified antidepressants. At admission, her APACHE II score was found to be 13, Glasgow outcome score was 1 and Karnofsky score was 0. She remained in hospital for 2 days was discharged eventually. At a follow-up, she was found to be deceased [cause of death not stated]. Patient 25 (a 40-year-old man): The man was admitted to the ICU in Ireland following overdose of alcohol and paracetamol. At admission, his APACHE II score was found to be 21, Glasgow outcome score was 4 and Karnofsky score was 60. He remained in hospital for 4 days and was discharged eventually. At a follow-up, he was found to be alive. Patient 26 (a 48-year-old man): The man was admitted to the ICU in Ireland following overdose of alcohol and paracetamol. At admission, his APACHE II score was found to be 16, Glasgow outcome score was 1 and Karnofsky score was 0. He remained in hospital for 1 day and was discharged eventually. At a follow-up, he was found to be deceased [cause of death not stated].
